Washi Tape Bookmark

I'm back with another fun bookmark tutorial! This time I'm going to be using washi tape, aka Japanese paper tape. On Facebook Marketplace I recently scored over 100 rolls of tape, plus a storage box for $20!

These bookmarks are fun to make and a great beginner-friendly craft project. I used cardstock scraps for the bookmark base and backing. They are a perfect little gift to give someone special that you can personalize for your recipient. I find it relaxing to put on a show, relax and let my creativity flow.

If you vend at craft fairs, these are a great item to put on your checkout table or to give away as a thank you to your loyal customers. I like to work on a simple project like this during slow times at a craft fair. You don't have to bring a lot of supplies and customers love to see your creative process (even if it's a simple project like this!)

Let's get started!

You will need:

Washi Tape: There are so many options for buying washi tape. I like to use coordinating colors and mix up different widths. Buy a nice assortment like this to make coordinating colors easier.
Cardstock: To use as your bookmark base and backing. Scraps work perfectly!
Adhesive: My go-to glue is Tombow Mono
Single Hole Puncher: I'm using a 1/4" hole punch
Mini Tassels: These are great to have on hand for other papercrafting projects too! They are inexpensive and you get a huge variety of colors. Mine are 5" like these

Make the bookmark bases:

I prefer to use white cardstock for the base. Since washi tape is lightweight, like masking tape, if you use a dark color it will show through a bit and dull the designs on your tape.

Mine measure 1.5" x 5".

Make your design:

This is the fun part! Pick out as many different rolls of washi tape as you'd like. Mix colors, widths, patterns and finishes (matte, foil, sparkle, etc). You can make a repeating pattern with your tape or use one strip from each roll.

I started in the middle and worked my way up and then worked my way down. Let the tape hang a bit over the sides of your bookmark base.

Fold the tape over the back:

It is okay for the back side of your bookmark to look ugly. You are going to mount this onto a slightly larger piece of coordinating cardstock that will hide the tape. The most important thing is that the tape on the back side is flat.
